Mostly white, and a pop of color

Moving to Kansas City for work was the first time since school that a place was entirely mine: my own space, full creative freedom, and a real paycheck to furnish it with. I had no idea what my taste was yet. I knew what I liked in other people's homes, not what I would live with. So I ran it like a project. My aunt is an interior designer. She sent inspiration, then built a packet of furniture we could actually buy, and I told her the thing I kept noticing: I gravitate to white. Clean, calm, easy on the eyes. She said that was fine. Mostly white, and a pop of color here and there.

That is what we did, and it taught me something about my own taste. White couch, white walls, white table. Then bright blue chairs at the dining table, a loud blanket and pillows on the couch, artwork that is all statement pieces. It turns out I never wanted all white. I wanted what white does to color. Every colorful thing in that apartment stands out because everything around it stays quiet. This site is built the same way, for the same reason.
